n these speeches, consider that King says “1963 is not an end, but a beginning,” while Malcolm X states in his 1964 speech that it could be “the year of the ballot or the bullet.” Although Malcolm X and King are leaders of the civil rights movement, how are their purposes and points of view different?

Answer: Despite advocating for the same cause, these powerful leaders had different approaches to the issue at hand.

Step-by-step explanation:

Martin Luther King Jr. or MLK, had always advocated for the civil rights of black individuals. His methods of peaceful protest and holding non-violent rallies for his goal had worked far more than previously speculated.

Though his efforts were not entirely successful often facing torment from the corrupt authorities arresting and attempting to silence him via threats, violence, and even arresting him. His words like "1963 is not an end, but a beginning" help embody the persistence and strength of the entirety of the African-American community. It was through his peaceful persistence as a leader that allowed people to make change.

Similarly, Malcolm X had also advocated for the social freedoms of black folk, but his approach can be seen as a polar opposite from King's. In his speech The Ballot or the Bullet X explains that while a peaceful approach to gain personal freedoms and free African Americans from the shackles of oppression would be beneficial, he recognizes that the world is harsh and cruel, and would not hesitate to be violent if need be.

All in all, there is no right or wrong approach. Both X and King were both powerful and influential leaders of the civil rights movement, and despite having different ways to tackle the same issue, they had both invoked a positive change on their community.
