In the base solution of traditional 2-in-1 parenteral nutrition (PN) supplementation, lipids (fats) are not found. The traditional 2-in-1 PN solution typically contains dextrose (glucose) and amino acids to provide carbohydrates and proteins, respectively. However, it does not include lipids, which are essential dietary fats.
To provide complete nutrition, especially for patients who require long-term PN therapy, a 3-in-1 PN solution may be used. The 3-in-1 PN solution, also known as total parenteral nutrition (TPN), includes all three macronutrients: carbohydrates (dextrose), proteins (amino acids), and lipids (intravenous fat emulsion). This comprehensive formulation ensures that patients receive all the necessary nutrients for their metabolic needs.
