½j + 7

Jarrett splits his bag of j jelly beans into two equal piles

so now we have two equal piles of the jelly beans

½j and ½j

and gives one pile to his brother

so right now the brother has
½j

He then gives his brother seven more beans

we add 7 to our equation and now

this is the algebraic expression that represents the number of beans the brother has:

Answer: j/2+7= the amount his brother has

Explanation:

I'm going to do an example equation, so let's pretend j=30

Step 1: Divide the jelly beans in half (by 2)

30/2=15

Step 2: So now they each have 15 jellybeans, but if Jarrett gives his brother 7 jellybeans...

15+7= 22
