The largest known land animal is the African elephant (Loxodonta africana and Loxodonta cyclotis). Adult male African elephants, also known as bulls, can reach a shoulder height of up to 13 feet (4 meters) and weigh between 10,000 to 14,000 pounds (4,500 to 6,300 kilograms). Female African elephants, known as cows, are slightly smaller but still impressive in size.
