Heya There!

Question:

Are 3x²y²and —5x³y² like terms ?

Answer:

No, 3x²y² and -5x³y² aren't like terms..

  • ʟɪᴋᴇ ᴛᴇʀᴍs: It can be defined as the terms that contain the same variable which is raised to the same power is called as like terms.... only the numerical coefficients can vary.
  • We can combine the like terms to simplify the algebraic expressions so that the result of the expression can be obtained very easily...
  • Examples:- 4x² and 67x² , 6xy and 78xy , 98x²t and 100x²t etc....

How to identify like terms?

  1. When you look at algebraic terms to find like terms, first ignore the coefficients and only look if terms have the same variables with same exponents. Those terms which qualify this condition are called like terms.

Let's take an example to understand better,

Example:

Identify the like terms in the following expression:

15m + 2n – 4m + n +12m

Solution:

Step 1:

As the above condition says,

Like terms consist of same variables raised to same exponents.

Step 2:

The following are like terms because each term consists of variable, m, and a numeric coefficient.

15m, −4m, 12m

Step 3:

The following are like terms because each term consists of variable, n, and a numeric coefficient.

2n, n

Hope this helps you :)

carry on learning ;) ..
