My Future Career
Father: Now that you have completed exams for your final year at school, what are your plans for your future?
Son: I have yet to decide. I think I’ll apply to university, Dad. I’m not certain.
Father: Don’t you feel that by now you should have decided on your goal in life?
Son: My ultimate goal is to become an engineer like you, Dad.
Father: Well, Son, that takes a great deal of hard work. Are you ready for that commitment?
Son: Yes, Dad, you are my inspiration.
Father: Alright then, let’s get that application ready. I know a great university where you will excel.

The listening text can be used to teach direct and indirect speech by first playing the recording for the students to listen and understand the dialogue. Then, the teacher can explain the difference between direct speech (using the exact words spoken) and indirect speech (reporting what was said). The teacher can provide examples from the dialogue and ask the students to identify whether it is direct or indirect speech. Finally, the students can practice converting direct speech to indirect speech and vice versa using sentences from the dialogue.
