Let g = gold and s = silver
g + s = 40
80g + 60s = 2680
g = 40 - s
80(40 - s) + 60s = 2680
3200 - 80s + 60s = 2680
3200 - 20s = 2680
-20s = -520
s = 16
16 silver rings were sold
