You answer this by finding the value of the disrimonant which is the B^2 - 4ac
Where the equation is ax^2 + bx +c = 0
Here it is
4^2 - 4*1*k
For equal real roots this is 0, so
4^2 - 4K = 0
4K = 16
So k = 4 for equal real roots
For real distinct roots
16 - 4K > 0
4K < 16
K < 4 for real distinct roots

Explanation:

if given eqn's roots are equal then discriminant = 0.

b² -4ac = 0

=> Here b = 4

a= 1

c = k

So 4² -4*1*k = 0

=> 16 = 4k

=> k = 4.

If given eqn's roots are distinct but real, D>0

So b²-4ac >0

=> Here b = 4

a= 1

c = k

So 4² -4*1*k >0

=> 16 > 4k

=> k<4.
