The distracting effect of talking on the cell phone while driving has been well-documented. However, some evidence suggests that practicing multi-tasking can improve performance. A group of drivers (n=22) were measured on the number of driving mistakes made on a driving game while talking on a cell phone before and after practice. The average improvement after practice was 3. 4 points (SD=2. 7). Find the following, using α=. 05 :

Using a one-sample t-test with α=0.05, we find that practicing multi-tasking (talking on a cell phone while driving) resulted in a significant improvement in driving performance. The average improvement after practice was 3.4 points (SD=2.7). The p-value was small, indicating strong evidence against the null hypothesis (no improvement).
