What can a photographer do to help ensure that they don’t take an image with a distracting background?

Clearing the background, if possible, is a helpful solution to this. If it’s unable to do, they can blur the image by using a long focal-length lens or a good variable-focus-length lens and zooming in on the subject. Manually blurring background after the photo has been taken is another solution.
