Slaves coming to the American colonies from Africa were happy to arrive on South Carolina rice plantations since masters there gave especially good care to their slaves

As lowcounty rice planters profited, they drove slaves harder. Slaves worked more days of each year, clearing forests and building the fields. They also labored longer hours each day, weeding rice plants in the new fields or processing the grain. The British slave trade, meanwhile, rapidly expanded.
