Kate bought 5 pounds of hamburger and 2 pounds of hot dogs and paid $28. 50.

Eric bought half the amount of hamburger and a fourth of the amount of hot

dogs that Kate did and paid $12. 50. What is the cost per pound of the hot dogs?

Answer:

Let h = cost of one pound of hamburgers

d = cost per pound of the hot dogs

5h + 2d = $28.50----->5h + 2d = $28.50

2.5h + .5d = $12.50--->5h + d = $25.00

d = $3.50

h = $4.30

$3.50 per pound of hot dogs

$4.30 per pound of hamburgers
