Let S stand for Sams age and P stand for Pats age.

S + P = 30
S = 2P

Substitute 2P for the S in the first equation and solve for P

2P + P = 30
3P = 30
P = 10

S = 2(10)
S = 20

Sam is 20 and Pat is 10
