Questions that have either “yes” or “no” for an answer are formed using auxiliary verbs at the beginning of the sentence, except when "be" is the verb; as it's an auxiliairy nothing changes.

for others verbs than "be", you must use "do" as an auxilairy to form the question (or negation)

present = do/ does if 3rd p. sing.

past = did

as the auxiliairy is conjugated the verb stays at its base

do/does + subject + base verb + ? > simple present

did + subject + base verb + ? > past simple
