El mito del chupacabras comenzó en 1992, cuando los periódicos en Puerto Rico, El Vocero y El Nuevo Día, comenzaron a publicar en sus páginas noticias sobre extrañas matanzas de animales que tenían un patrón en común: se encontraban sin una gota de sangre en el cuerpo y presentaban como única herida un agujero en el cuello. Poco después, se comenzaron a reportar otras muertes similares en América del Sur, el Caribe, los Estados Unidos y, en particular, en México. Es así como nació la leyenda urbana del chupacabras.

Algunas personas aseguraron haber visto, cerca de las matanzas, una pequeña figura de color verde oscuro, con los ojos grandes y una cabeza ovalada como un extraterrestre. Se cuenta el mito del chupacabras para asustar a los niños a comportarse bien.
