: there refers to a place. In this sentence, the enslaved people are the main object of the sentence, meaning that their must be used to refer to the actions of the enslaved people.
A 'to be' verb can be used in the second sentence to connect the noun [the underground railroad] to its descriptor. While 'is' can be an option as a 'to be' verb, the underground railroad existed in the past, so
adding 'was' is the answer.
