Answer:

I / R = 1 / R1 + 1 / R2

R = (R1 * R2) / (R1 + R2)

R = 16 * 20 / (16 + 20) = 8.89 Ω

b) I = V / R = 40 / 8.89 = 4.5 amps

c) I = 40 / 16 = 2.5 amps

Check:

Current thru 20 Ω resistor = 40 / 20 = 2 amps

Total current = 2.5 + 2 = 4.5 amps
