The local Member of Parliament has recruited a number of the members of a youth group and is

willing to sponsor them to set up a business. He has however given them a condition that if they
must raise Ksh 100,000 or over, he will then double the amount raised. The members decided to
contribute equally to the kitty, but as the fundraising was going on, 40 of them withdrew from
the project necessitating each of the remaining members to increase their contribution by Ksh
20,000/= to meet the minimum set by the MP.
Required:
a) Formulate this as an equation and establish the number of the members in the original group,
assuming the amount raised was Ksh 812,500/-. (2 marks)
b) If the remaining members’ did not adjust their contributions following the departure of their
colleagues would the MP’s condition have been met, justify your answer? (3 marks)

Answer:

The minimum number of members in the original group is 112.

Total amount raised would be 720,000 shillings, which is less than 812,500 shillings.

Explanation:

The MP wanted the youth group to raise 100,000 shillings. The group started with 112 members and each contributed an equal amount. However, 40 members left the group and the remaining members had to increase their contributions by 20,000 shillings each in order to meet the MP's condition.

If the remaining members had not increased their contributions, then the total amount raised would have been less than 100,000 shillings. Therefore, the remaining members had to increase their contributions in order to meet the MP's condition.

In other words, the group had to raise 812,500 shillings. If the remaining members had not increased their contributions, then the total amount raised would have been 720,000 shillings, which is less than 812,500 shillings. Therefore, the remaining members had to increase their contributions in order to meet the MP's condition.
