1. For a school play, Scott sold 6 adult tickets and 15 student tickets and
collected $48. Dominique sold 8 adult tickets and 7 student tickets and
collected $38. Find the cost of each ticket.

let adult ticket = x,

student ticket = y

according to the question,

6x + 15y = 48 (1)

8x + 7y = 38 (2)

from equation (1)

x = 48 - 15y / 6 (3)

by substituting the value of x from equation (3) into equation (2)

8(48 - 15y / 6) + 7y = 38

384 - 120y / 6 + 7y = 38

384 - 120y + 42y / 6 = 38

384 - 78y = 38 * 6

384 - 228 = 78y

thus, y = 2

by substituting the value of y in equation (3),

x = 48 - 15(2) / 6 = 3

thus,

cost of adult ticket, x = $3

cost of student ticket, y = $2
