Magnesium hydroxide produces an osmotic effect by pulling water into the bowel. As the water moves through the bowel, there is an increase of pressure in the bowel and increases perilstalsis. Magnesium hydroxide causes complications for a patient with kidney dysfunction because it causes a toxic buildup of magnesium in the in the body.
