It is incorrect to say that astronauts are weightless in space while orbiting Earth in a space shuttle because gravity exists everywhere in the universe, and no matter how great the distance between objects, a gravitational force still exists. The reason that astronauts appear weightless while in orbit around Earth is that the space shuttle and the astronauts are in a state of free fall around it. This means that they are both falling at the same rate as the space shuttle, which gives the impression of weightlessness.
In my response, I included that gravity exists everywhere, and no matter how large the distance between objects, a gravitational force still exists. I also mentioned that both the space shuttle and the astronauts are in free fall, which is the reason for the apparent weightlessness experienced by the astronauts in space.
