An example of a public good is street lighting. Two characteristics of public good are non-rivalry and non-excludability.

Street lighting is non rival and this means that the consumption of street lighting by one person will not reduce the amount of street lighting available for another person to use.

It also also non-excludable because we cannot prevent certain people from using it while allowing others.

Say for example, there are 2 groups of people and Group A has paid for street lighting but group B hasn't. If you provide street lighting for those who have paid (group A), group B will also benefit from it despite not having paid and you won't be able to stop them from doing so. This is known as the free rider problem and it is the reason why the private sector doesn't produce public goods
