Answer:

Ellis Island.

Why did immigrants go to Ellis Island?

From 1892 to 1954 Ellis Island was the immigration processing center for the New York city area. New York was a major port of entry for especially European immigrants. Immigrants were checked for diseases, “dangerous” political ideas, and checked if they had any personal or financial connections in the USA. It was a government facility that an immigrant hoped would process them through rather quickly. The longer you had to stay the more likely it would be that you be turned around and sent back to where you came from. There were other such centers such as Angel Island for immigrants entering from the Pacific and it served the same purpose.
