Athens was more of an educational society . Boys and men went to school to learn various subjects & when they are finished with schoolat the age of 18 they were to take an active role in public affairs.

Athenian boys had to learn run , jump, and fight & they didn't have to devote their whole lives to the army. All men in Athens joined the army but only for two years.They helped defend the cities between the ages of 18 - 20.

They learned to read , write and count as well as sing and play music instruments. Boys also learned Greece history and legend. They also taught the boys how to be good public speakers. This training prepared boys for participant in the Athenian assembly.
