Why must gametes be haploid ?

gametes come together to form a zygote. in a diploid organism, gametes must be haploid so that the zygote will get the proper amount of genetic information. having a haploid set from each parent results in a diploid zygote. if the gametes were to be diploid, the zygote would have too many chromosomes.
