In the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition), which was the latest edition as of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, there are three major categories of substance-related disorders: substance use disorder, substance intoxication, and substance withdrawal. Substance use disorder encompasses a wide range of substances, and it is not limited to a specific substance.
For example, the DSM-5 identifies substance use disorder for substances such as alcohol, opioids (e.g., heroin, prescription painkillers), stimulants (e.g., cocaine, amphetamines), hallucinogens (e.g., LSD, mushrooms), cannabis, sedatives (e.g., benzodiazepines), and many others. Each substance may have its own specific criteria for diagnosis within the substance use disorder category.
