Factor out the greatest common factor (GCF) using the distributive property (do not solve!).

Answer: 4(2+3)

Explanation:
8 and 12 can be factored by 2 as well as 4. When they are factored by 2, the number can still be lower. The greatest common factor is 4 because the numbers can’t be factored any more.

Therefore,
\text{gcf}(8,12)=2^2=4.

And so
8+12=4(2+3).
