Paracetamol, also known as acetaminophen (which is also known by the brand name Tylenol), is a nonopioid analgesic medication with antipyretic properties indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate pain with and without opioid analgesic medications and fevers. The medication's mechanism of action is the inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis, the hormone-like lipid compounds that mediate fever and pain signaling within the central nervous system. It is recommended not to administer more than 3-4 grams (3000-4000 milligrams) of this medication in a 24-hour timespan and to avoid adult beverages while taking the medication because of an increased risk of liver damage. If an overdose of this medication occurs, acetylcysteine (brand named Acetadote) should be administered as the antidote.
