Let's solve Eqn. A first.

Eqn. A is:

5x = 3x

Divide each side by x:

5 = 3 (which, obviously, is a false statement)

So what did we do to get from Eqn. A to Eqn. B?

I divided each side by x.

So to get from Eqn. A to Eqn. B, I divided each side by the same variable.

Hence, D is correct.

Answer: D. Multiply/Divide both sides by the same variable expression.

Explanation:

Given:

A. 5x = 3x

B. 5 = 3

Questions: How can we get equation B from equation A.

You can equation B from equation A by dividing both sides by the variable x or by multiplying both sides by the reciprocal of the variable x.

5x = 3x

/x /x

5 = 3

5x = 3x

*1/x *1/

5 = 3
