A floor restoration service offers two plans. Under the "pay-as-you-go" plan, they charge $800 plus $4 per square foot for a floor of any size. Under their "guaranteed-gleam" plan, they charge a flat rate of $2900 for a floor that is guaranteed to shine. For what size floors, in square feet, would it save the consumer money to use the pay-as-you-go plan?

The pay-as-you-go plan saves the consumer money on a floor that is = sq ft.

Explanation:

so, let's see for what square footage the "pay-as-you-go" plan costs the same as the flat rate plan.

x is the number of square feet.

2900 = 800 + x×4

2100 = 4x

x = 2100/4 = 525 ft²

for floors smaller than 525 ft² the "pay-as-you-go" plan is cheaper (the price is below $2900).

for a floor equal to 525 ft² the price is the same.

so, your teacher asked the wrong question.

as I said, for any floor smaller than 525 ft² the customer saves money.
