x = 6 , XP = 27

Explanation:

since X is between P and Q , then

PX + XQ = PQ , that is

5x - 3 + 13 = 40

5x + 10 = 40 ( subtract 10 from both sides )

5x = 30 ( divide both sides by 5 )

x = 6

Then

XP = 5x - 3 = 5(6) - 3 = 30 - 3 = 27
