Answer:

There are 9 $45 shares and 18 $25 shares.

Explanation:

Let x = the number of $45 shares

Let y = the number of $25 shares

Two equations:

45x + 25y = 855

y = 3x + 9 Substitute 3x + 9 for y in the first equation

45x + 25(3x + 9) = 855 Distribute the 25

45x + 75x - 225 = 858 Combine like terms

12x - 225 = 855 add 225 to both sides

12x = 1080 Divide both sides by 12

x = 9

There are 18 $25 dollar shares.

Substitute 9 in for x in either of the two original equations.

y = 3x + 9

y = 3(9) - 9

y = 18

There are 9 $45 shares.

Check:

45x + 25y = 855

45(9) + 25(18) = 855

405 + 450 = 855

855 = 855 Checks

y = 3x - 9

18 = 3(9) -9

18 = 27 - 9

18 = 18 Checks
