The process is responsible for the conversion of light energy into chemical energy which can eventually be used by plants for growth and development. The site of photosynthesis in plants is the leaf, and for this reason, it is regarded as one of the most important organs of the plant.

The leaf is composed of different layers of tissue that work together to facilitate photosynthesis. The outer layer of the leaf, known as the epidermis, is responsible for protecting the internal structures of the leaf from external damage. The epidermis has small pores, known as stomata, which open and close to regulate the exchange of gases and water vapor between the plant and the environment.

The mesophyll layer is located beneath the epidermis and is responsible for the actual process of photosynthesis. It is made up of two distinct types of cells, namely, the palisade cells and the spongy cells. The palisade cells are located on the upper side of the mesophyll layer and are filled with chloroplasts. Chloroplasts are organelles that contain chlorophyll, the pigment responsible for capturing light energy.

The spongy cells, on the other hand, are located on the lower side of the mesophyll layer and are less densely packed than the palisade cells. They contain fewer chloroplasts, but they are responsible for allowing the diffusion of gases and water vapor between the stomata and the palisade cells.
