The Non-Intercourse Act was a U.S. law passed in 1809. It replaced the Embargo Act of 1807 and aimed to alleviate some of the economic hardships caused by the restriction of American trade during the Napoleonic Wars. The act prohibited trade with France and Britain but reopened trade with all other countries. It was an attempt to assert American neutrality in the conflict between France and Britain while protecting American interests. However, the act ultimately failed to resolve the trade issues and was later replaced by the Macon's Bill No. 2 in 1810.
