Answer:

x - y = 7

Explanation:

x : y = 5 : 3

x = 5a & y = 3a

x + y = 56

Substitute x any y value in the above equation,

5a + 3a = 56

8a = 56

Divide both sides by 8,

a = 56 ÷ 8

a = 7

x = 5a

= 5 * 7

x = 35

y = 3a

= 3*8

y = 21

Now find the value of x -y.

x - y = 35 - 21

= 7
