A force of 14 lb is required to hold a spring stretched 2 in. beyond its natural length. How much work W is done in stretching it from its natural length to 7 in. beyond its natural length? W = X ft-lb

Explanation:

Find the spring constant , k k = 14 lb/2 in = 7 lb/ in

Use equation for work of a spring w = 1/2 k x^2

w = 1/2 * 7 * 7 = 24.5 in lbs = 2.04 ft lbs
