5x²-10x-23=0

you can't factor this, so you need to use the quadratic formula:

(-b±√(b²-4*a*c))/2a

in our case, a= 5 b= -10 and c = -23

(-(-10)±√(10²-4*5*(-23)))/(2*5)

(10±√(100+460))/10

(10±√560)/10

we solve this twice. once where ± is + and again where ± is -

(10+√560)/10 = 3.36643191324

(10-√560)/10= -1.36643191324
