The city of Jerusalem is sacred to many religious traditions, including the Abrahamic religions Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Some of the most sacred places for each of these religions are found in Jerusalem and the one shared between all three is the Temple Mount.
Jerusalem has been the holiest city in Judaism and the ancestral and spiritual homeland of the Jewish people since the 10th century BCE
The origins of Christianity started in Jerusalem when Jesus was taken to the temple as a child. He later preached and healed in Jerusalem temple courts. Jesus was also crucified and resurrected in Jerusalem.
In Islam, multiple prophets were associated with Jerusalem so they also consider it a holy place. Islamic prophet Muhammad visited on one of his journeys. Because of this, Jerusalem was the first Qibla (direction of prayer) for Muslims. The Dome of the Rock is a sacred shrine in Jerusalem on the Temple Mount. It is believe the Muhammad ascended to heaven and was given the second pillar of Islam here.
