Answer:

x = 8 , x = - 2

Explanation:

the square of the number x is x² and 16 more than 6 times the number is 6x + 16 , then

x² = 6x + 16 ( subtract 6x + 16 from both sides )

x² - 6x - 16 = 0 ← in standard form

(x - 8)(x + 2) = 0 ← in factored form

equate each factor to zero and solve for x

x - 8 = 0 ⇒ x = 8

x + 2 = 0 ⇒ x = - 2

As a check

8² = 64 and 6(8) + 16 = 48 + 16 = 64 ← true

(- 2)² = 4 and 6(- 2) + 16 = - 12 + 16 = 4 ← true

then the required number is x = 8 or x = - 2
