During a clearance sale at a department store, all items were sold at 70% off the regular price. Michelle had a discount coupon that would get her an additional 5% off the discounted price of any item. If Michelle paid $62.70 for a leather bag during the sale, what was the original price of the leather bag? Make sure to use only one variable,

Answer:

  • $220

--------------------------

Let the original price be x.

After 70% discount the price becomes:

  • x - 70% =
  • x - 0.7x =
  • 0.3x

After a further 5% discount the price is:

  • 0.3x - 5% =
  • 0.3x - 0.05*0.3x =
  • 0.285x

This is same as $62.70, set up an equation and solve for x:

  • 0.285x = 62.7
  • x = 62.7/0.285
  • x = 220

The original price of the leather bag was $220.
