"However, it was of no use, as I only seemed to be getting further and further away from the tree. EARNESTLY, I climbed off the boat and, as a hungry shark, swam towards the island, resisting the bitter ice that clung onto me."

Is it safe to use the word "earnestly" or should I replace it with "impatiently", I feel like earnestly might be better, because I don't think impatiently aligns with the context, but I need your help. What would you choose (considering the context) (can also choose another word, would appreciate it)

Answer:

Replace the word with impatiently.

Step-by-step explanation:

The word, "impatiently", is a better fit considering the context. Earnestly means, "with sincere and intense conviction; seriously". Impatiently means "in a restlessly eager manner".

In the context, the character is not expressing conviction for anything. He seems to be in a panicked state because he was getting farther from the tree. Therefore, impatiently is a better fit.

Other options could be, hastily, or fretfully.
