2³ → in this case the base number is 2 and the exponent is 3, so you will multiply 2 times itself, 3 times:

2³ = 2 · 2 · 2 = 8

In the question asked, 2 is being raised by 4, so you will multiply 2 times itself, 4 times:

2^4 = 2·2·2·2 = 16
