I read this before! In the book “The Things They Carried,” Tim O’Brien does not hold any particular person responsible for his going to the Vietnam War. While not holding anybody accountable, he elaborates on the things that influenced him to go to war such as cultural pressures, environmental expectations, and even personal motivations. In this sense, O’Brien deems societal values and responsibilities entirely to be his reason for going to war instead of individualizing the situation.
