Amanda is reading a 40-page novel for her English class. On Monday, she reads 3/8

of the novel. On Tuesday, she reads 8 pages, and on Wednesday, she reads 1/4
of the novel. How many more pages does Amanda have until she finishes the novel?

Answer: 7 pages

========================================================

Work Shown:

3/8 of 40 = (3/8)*40 = 15 pages read on Monday.

8 more pages were read on Tuesday. So far that's 15+8 = 23 pages.

For Wednesday, she reads (1/4)*40 = 10 pages. That bumps the total to 23+10 = 33 pages. There are 40 - 33 = 7 pages remaining.

--------

Another approach:

3/8 + 1/4 = 3/8 + 2/8 = 5/8 of the pages were read on Monday and Wednesday.

(5/8)*40 = 25 pages were read on Monday and Wednesday.

Add on the 8 pages read on Tuesday: 25+8 = 33

Then there are 40 - 33 = 7 pages remaining.
