First make the fraction into an improper fraction:
Do denominator (bottom number) times the whole number (big number at the front of the fraction) and then plus the numerator (the number at the top)
So for the first one you would do, 3 x 2 = 6
6 + 1 = 7
New fraction = 7/3
Do this for the next fraction:
4 x 1 = 4
4 + 3 = 7
New fraction = 7/4
Now make the denominator the same for both fractions.
Do this by multiplying it by a number to make them the same.
For example here you can multiply 3 by 4, and multiply 4 by 3 to make them both 12.
And remember whatever you do to the denominator, you do to the numerator. So this is our question:
7/3 + 7/4
Multiplying denominators by 3 and 4
7/3 (x4) + 7/4 (x3)
So the new question is:
28/12 + 21/12
Now we can add the new numerators together. leaving the denominators the same.
28 + 21 = 49
Answer = 49/12
To make it a mixed number just divide 49 by 12, until you get a decimal.
You can divide 49 by 12 4 times.
Mixed number answer is:
4 1/12
(if the question doesnt ask for a mixed number you dont need to do it. But its better if you do).
