By the end of the book he see's himself as a hero. And is proud of himself by not only saving those kids, but impressing Dallas Winston. At the beginning of the book he probably sees himself as trying to be cautious and trying to evade what happened to him (when the socs beat him up), it is revealed that he is su!c!adal telling ponyboy this in the lot and wants to escape to a better life. Even though he is quiet, he still wants to be loved and seen, and feels as if he is not worthy enough because of the neglect from his parents
