Text 1
Summer is the hottest season of the year. The temperature can stay warm, even after the Sun has gone down at night. There are plenty of leaves on the trees and lots of plants are in flower. Many trees and other plants produce fruit during summer. People spend time outside, enjoying the long, sunny days. In the northern hemisphere, Earth’s upper half, it is summer from June to September. In the southern hemisphere, Earth’s lower half, it is summer from December to March. During their summers, the areas around the North and South Poles have constant sunlight, even at midnight, because the sun does not set.

Text 2
Summer in Japan lasts from about June to mid-September, depending on the location. Summers are hot and humid, with temperatures ranging from approximately 70 to 90 °F. July and August are typically the hottest and most humid times of year, and can be uncomfortable for sightseeing if you are averse to humidity. But despite (or perhaps because of) the torrid climate, summer can also be one of the liveliest times to be in Japan. Japan has more festivals (matsuri) than almost any other country in the world, and Japanese festivals are often spectacular. Summer is also renowned for its extraordinary fireworks extravaganzas. Hanabi (fireworks) are taken seriously in Japan, and going to a hanabi taikai is entertaining. Tokyo’s Sumida River Fireworks are especially famous, but throughout the summer fireworks displays take place all around the country.

Text 2 is the report text.

Text 1 provides general information about summer, including its characteristics and the timing of the season in different hemispheres. It describes the weather, the presence of leaves and flowers, fruit production, and people's activities during summer. The text provides an overview of summer without focusing on a specific location or event.

Text 2, on the other hand, provides more specific information about summer in Japan. It mentions the duration of the season, the hot and humid climate, and the temperature range. It also highlights the cultural aspects of summer in Japan, such as the abundance of festivals (matsuri) and the popularity of fireworks displays (hanabi taikai). The text gives details about Tokyo's Sumida River Fireworks and mentions that fireworks displays take place throughout the country during the summer.

Considering the specific details about Japan's summer and the emphasis on cultural events and attractions, Text 2 aligns more closely with the characteristics of a report text.
