a mother is 33 years older than her twin children. in 3 years, her age will be twice the amount of both her childrens combined. how old are the twins now?

Set up two equations as per information given:

  • 1) x - y = 33, (age relation now)
  • 2) x + 3 = 2(y + 3 + y + 3) (relation in 3 years time)

Simplify the second equation and substitute x = y + 33:

  • x + 3 = 4y + 12
  • y + 33 + 3 = 4y + 12
  • y + 36 = 4y + 12
  • 4y - y = 36 - 12
  • 3y = 24
