Point H is between G and I and GI = 50. Use the segment addition postulate to solve x.

GH = 4x - 6
HI = 2x + 2

Answer:

  • x = 9

The segment GI contains both GH and HI.

Using the segment addition postulate we set up an equation:

  • GI = GH + HI

Substitute to get:

  • 50 = 4x - 6 + 2x + 2
  • 50 = 6x - 4
  • 54 = 6x
  • x = 54/6
  • x = 9

So the value of x is 9.
