Gather the terms that are alike ( often called ' like - terms') as follows:

( note that the ' - ' sign in front of the second polynomial reverses all of the signs in the polynomial)

(3x^2 - 2x^2) + ( 5x +4x) + ( -8 - 3)

x^2 + 9x - 11
